The aim of this handbook is to help people better understand how opioids work and why Suboxone® can be an effective treatment for opioid dependence.

We have created two nearly identical versions of the booklet. The first booklet uses the brand-name "Suboxone®" throughout the booklet. We have used the brand-name because this is the name most of our patients use. Whenever possible, we wanted to use language that our patients already know and understand, which is why we chose to use the (more familiar) brand name.

The second version of the booklet uses the generic name "Buprenorphine". We created this version after learning that some academic teaching hospitals, etc. have policies against distributing materials that contain brand names. We therefore created a second version of the booklet that can be freely distributed by these institutions.
